Dada, Digital Poetics and Political Conservatism

One of the recurring thoughts I have regarding the articulation of a 'history' to digital poetics is as follows: by appropriating or finding formal similarities in movements like Dada or other literary Modernist groups, what does digital poetics have to say about the fact that many of these forms and techniques are directly symptomatic of the politics of the culture at that time period. The rise of Dada is a direct response to bourgeois capitalist society just as WWI was breaking out. Its anti-art mentality is response to the various colonial and capitalist ideologies fermenting in that historical time period. Hannah Hoch's early use of the collage technique is a direct attack on patriarchal conceptions of binary sexualities and gender identities. What is the the political motivation behind the use of these modernist formal techniques in digital poetics. Brian Kim Stefan's work certainly takes the political into account; however, if the general play of the 'innovation' is done merely formally, does this not valorize formal technique w/o consideration to how that technique relates to the broader society; in other words, if one is merely playing with material, formal considerations, is this not a manifestation of political conservatism? With the formal 'innovations' acting as a fantasy of liberalism and political innovation? Mere formal 'innovations' should not be mistakenly equated with political revolution or liberalism. Thoughts?

I think you and I are operating on similar frequencies, because I found myself thinking about this as well. It also probably has something to do with teaching "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and trying to explain Modernism in general to my frightened students. Anyway, I can't remember if it's Hayles or Funkhouser, but one of them explicitly states that poets associated with movements like Dada and Vorticism are the digital poets' literary forebears, but without the same motivations. I agree that it points to political conservatism. My exact word was "hollow" but we know it's the same thing (zing!). I don't know what to make of formal innovation for the sake of formal innovation. Art for art's sake? Is that ethical in a time of so much political strife domestically and internationally? Is it ok to stop our ears and make pretty things while the Iraq war rages and the Sudan wages a genocide campaign against its own people? I sound crazy, don't I? But a serious crazy. I feel like I should be at a podium, shouting at a rally.
